Massage
for Fido?
By: Dennis
Fetko, Ph.D., “Dr. Dog”
One
of the best things to do with your dog is a thorough daily massage--and I mean
thorough! While the dog lies down
quietly on a soft surface, begin at the nose and gently rub his muzzle, gums,
teeth, ears, neck, and eyes. His
eyes will close automatically as you touch them gently.
Continue right down each leg to the pads on the paws and eventually to
the tip of the tail. Rub everything,
gently probing with your fingers as you go along.
Some people begin and end the massage with slow,
gentle strokes from the dog’s head to his tail.
Don’t be surprised if your dog is sound asleep by the end of the
massage!
This
light, relaxing massage is a wonderful gift for your dog (and you)!
On the other hand, deep massage should be left to professionals who have
knowledge of anatomy so that they can perform the massage safely.
The whole procedure won’t take more than a few
minutes and will result in TREMENDOUS benefits.
You’ll bond that dog more closely to you than you can imagine,
especially if you speak soothingly as you massage.
You’ll also spot trouble--cuts, ticks, sprains, and foxtails--before it
gets serious. And your dog will get
better medical care because he won’t be frightened or fighting the vet every
step of the exam.
You’ll
also reduce the chance of the dog snapping when a child or a stranger sticks a
hand out to pet him. And notice how
good you feel!
